PRWMA (Parkland Regional Waste Management Authority):

History

Parkland Regional Waste Management Authority Inc. came into being in 2001. The associate members met at a R.M. spring meeting in Canora and then an informational meeting in Kamsack. It was decided to elect a interim board and work on a constitution and by-laws. Soon after PRWMA was incorporated as a not for profit society and the by-laws and constitution was accepted and passed by all members. We have grown somewhat from the original group. We now serve approximately 10,000 square kilometers and a population of about 13000.

 Our Vision

We will make the cost of collecting all waste more reasonable and divert all recyclables away from the waste stream.

 Our Mission

We will decommission the many unacceptable garbage dumps as they become unusable under the direction of Saskatchewan Environment. We will construct permitted central landfills to serve the entire area we cover. We will divert the projected 50% of waste that is recyclable to the depots.

Organization

PRWMA is comprised of 23 municipalities both rural and urban and they contain 31 diverse communities and 2 provincial parks. (see the list of members below)

Operation

PRWMA owns 150 paper fiber bins located over our area. A contractor empties all bins every ten days. The material collected is taken to a central facility located in the Town of Kamsack. It is sorted into three grades of recyclable material and then baled. The facility in Kamsack employs six full time part time employees including a manager.

Services

We presently only collect bale and sell paper fiber. We will continue to expand and look after the other materials (plastic, tin and glass) as their markets improve.

Market

Presently all paper firer is salable. The price fluctuates and there is no certainty in its value. The expected stewardship program to be instituted by Saskatchewan Environment in April of 2006 will solve the difficulties with the paper market. This same multi material stewardship program should address all the difficulties we encounter.

Communications

PRWMA advises all members of each meeting date and agenda and with minutes of the previous meeting. All members are welcome at our monthly board meetings and can bring to our attention any difficulties or concerns they have. Our board members and administrator are also available by phone or email.

Our annual general meeting also makes available all of our previous years activities and any future plans we have may propose.

 Our Members

The following list is comprised of all the communities in our area. Those in black are not members but still do contribute to the amount of paper fiber we process. There is also information about the number and location of recycle bins. Population served is approximately 13000.
